Dishanna Pillay – The Silent Engine Behind Malaysia’s 4-0 Victory

Malaysia recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Iraq in their second Group E match of the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, but one player who stood out was Canadian-Malaysian heritage forward Dishanna Pillay.

The 16-year-old was once again trusted by head coach Takayoshi Ishihara to lead the Harimau Malaya attack, following an impressive performance against Syria on Monday.

From the opening whistle, Dishanna spearheaded the pressing efforts of the Malayan Tigress U-17 side. Her explosive runs had a significant impact, particularly in limiting Iraq’s defensive options and forcing their backline to repeatedly clear the ball under pressure.

The hard work of the Vancouver United FC captain once again kept Iraq’s defenders on their toes. In the 26th minute, Dishanna pressed an Iraqi defender and forced an error, earning Malaysia a corner in the process.

Her relentless work rate earned praise from the match commentator, who highlighted how her pressing and tireless runs disrupted the opposition’s rhythm.

Several aspects of her performance may also have gone unnoticed by many spectators. Dishanna was frequently making intelligent runs to create space and position herself to receive passes from her teammates.

In the 29th and 36th minutes, she attempted to make runs to get on the end of through balls, but unfortunately, her teammates’ passes failed to reach their intended destination. Three explosive runs, yet none of these efforts appeared in the statistics.

Dishanna’s standout moment came in the 68th minute, when she dropped into midfield to receive the ball under intense pressure. She controlled it superbly before swiftly evading three Iraqi players in a single attacking move. It was arguably her best individual moment of the night.

Her determination was further evident when she bravely attempted to head a cross from You Lim while surrounded by Iraqi defenders, demonstrating her commitment to finding a goal for the Malayan Tigress U-17 side.

Dishanna was substituted in the 69th minute, with Malaysia already leading by three goals, allowing a teammate to take her place. With a decisive clash against India scheduled just two days later, the decision to rest the main striker after 69 minutes of tireless work was a sensible move by the coaching staff.

Malaysia will face India on Sunday, 11 October 2026, at 9.00 pm Malaysian time, with the winner securing a place at the 2027 AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup.

Against an Indian side expected to defend in a compact block, Dishanna’s ability to lead the press from the front will be a crucial weapon for Malaysia. This time, however, her well-timed runs will need to be met with the passes they deserve.
